PATENTSCOPE is a free, global patent search database run by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It provides access to international patent documents, including published international applications (PCT), national and regional patent filings, granted patents, and related technical information, plus a growing amount of non-patent literature.

Key points:
- History and scope: launched in 2001 for PCT, expanded in 2008 to include national and regional patent collections, and has grown to hundreds of millions of records. As of 2023, it contained over 111 million patent documents, including millions of PCT applications.
- What you can search: a multilingual interface (English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and others). Search by keywords, patent numbers, inventors, applicants, and more. Advanced search offers filters like publication date, patent classification, legal status, and supports Boolean operators and wildcards.
- Patent families: view the full family tree across jurisdictions to track related documents, priority applications, divisional filings, and related granted patents.
- Full text and downloads: access the complete patent content, including description, claims, drawings, and other information in PDF format.
- Translation and language tools: uses WIPO Translate to translate patent documents and integrates Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval to translate search terms and find synonyms.
- Chemical searches: supports exact structure, substructure, and Markush searches; you can draw structures or search by names and references.
- Non-patent literature: since 2021, PATENTSCOPE has begun including open-access non-patent literature from publishers such as Springer Nature, MDPI, and IEEE, though some major publishers (ACS, AIP, Wiley) are not yet covered, so for comprehensive prior art you may need other sources.
- Access and status: free to use with no registration required; PATENTSCOPE is online and continuously developing.
