Ancient Egypt was a civilization in eastern North Africa along the Nile River, in today’s Egypt. It began around 3150 BC when Upper and Lower Egypt were united under the first pharaoh. The Egyptians built impressive pyramids, temples, and obelisks, and they made important advances in math, medicine, irrigation and farming, shipbuilding, glass and ceramics, as well as writing and literature. They also created one of the oldest known peace treaties. Their monuments have inspired people for centuries.

Egyptology is the study of ancient Egypt’s history, language, religion, art, and architecture. It looks at the period from the early settlements in the 5th millennium BC until the end of native religious practices in the 4th century AD. An Egyptologist is someone who studies these topics.
