Ostenholz Moor

Ostenholz Moor is a raised bog on the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is named after the nearby village of Ostenholz and is not far from Meißendorf. Much of the bog lies inside the Bergen-Hohne Military Training Area, so nature has been allowed to develop largely on its own.

The River Meiße separates Ostenholz Moor from the Meißendorf Lakes and Bannetzer Moor nature reserve. The bog helps form a natural boundary for the reserve, which Celle district has bought. The Meißendorf Lakes used to be ponds for fish farming, but today they are an important site for migrating and breeding marsh and water birds. About 250 bird species can be seen there, including cranes, black storks, and ospreys.
