Oh My God (Kaiser Chiefs song)
Oh My God is a song by the English indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs. It was first released in May 2004 on the Drowned in Sound label as their first major-label single, after a previous label folded. The original release only reached number 66 in the UK charts, and it had a very small run of 500 copies with artwork by frontman Ricky Wilson. The B-sides were earlier versions of songs that would appear on their album Employment.
The track was re-released on 21 February 2005 ahead of Kaiser Chiefs’ second album, Employment. This time it became a hit, peaking at number 6 in the UK and becoming their first top-10 single.
Oh My God was written by Ricky Wilson, Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines and Nick Hodgson. The original single was produced by Nick Hodgson; the 2005 re-release involved producer Stephen Street.
Two music videos were made for the song, both directed by Charlie Paul. The 2004 video is a 3D-animated voyage with the band on a ferry and surreal, floating objects. The 2005 video, made for the reissue, shows the band performing in an abandoned toy store and features a mix of live-action and animation.
The song became a live staple for Kaiser Chiefs, used in big shows like Live 8 in 2005 and their 2008 Elland Road homecoming gig.
In 2006 Lily Allen covered Oh My God on a Mark Ronson mixtape, and in 2007 Ronson released a version with Allen as the second single from his album Version. That version reached number 8 in the UK, and its video features a cartoon Lily with the Kaiser Chiefs making a cameo.
The Kaiser Chiefs later released a reworked Stay Home edition of Oh My God in 2020 with new lockdown-inspired lyrics during the coronavirus pandemic, shared online in April 2020.
