Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council election, 1996

Elections were held on 2 May 1996. One third of the council’s 63 seats were up for election, with successful candidates serving four-year terms to 2000. The Labour Party gained overall control of Trafford Council, taking it from no overall control.

Labour, led by Beverley Hughes, remained Leader of the Council after the election. Labour won 10 of the 21 seats contested, Conservatives won 10, and Liberal Democrats won 1.

After the election the council composition was Labour 35 seats, Conservatives 23, Liberal Democrats 5. Before the election Labour had 29 seats, Conservatives 29, Liberal Democrats 5, so Labour gained 6 seats and the Conservatives lost 6.

Popular vote: Labour 28,366 (43.9%), Conservatives 26,390 (40.8%), Liberal Democrats 9,344 (14.5%).
