O Pioneers! is an American opera in two acts composed by Barbara Harbach, with a libretto by Jonathan Yordy. It is based on Willa Cather’s 1913 novel O Pioneers! Harbach, inspired by Cather’s stories of strong women, chose this opera because it includes themes ideal for the stage—long‑term love, family rivalry, and murder. She worked on the music from February 2008 to May 2009, even finishing the orchestration on a computer.

The world premiere took place on October 9, 2009, at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, directed by Mark Meier. It was a collaborative production involving UMSL’s College of Fine Arts and Communication, St. Louis Women’s Chorale, Dimensions Dance Center, and the Women In the Arts Initiative. A live recording of the premiere was broadcast on December 5, 2009 on KFUO-FM in St. Louis.

The libretto draws on Parts II, IV and V of the novel and follows Alexandra Bergson, a strong, intelligent farmer, as she and her family forge a life in Nebraska. The story includes her brother Emil, his childhood friend Carl Linstrum, and neighbors such as Marie Shabata and Amédée Chevalier (and his wife Angelique), along with Marie’s husband Frank Shabata. A choral group of Nebraskan farmers also appears.

Plot in brief
After their father dies, Alexandra builds a prosperous farm and the family’s life improves. Carl returns, and a romance grows between him and Alexandra. Emil is drawn to Marie, who is married to Frank Shabata, while Amédée Chevalier also appears in the story. Tensions rise as love and wealth clash, and a tragedy unfolds: Amédée is killed, and later Emil and Marie are shot by Frank. The community is stunned, and after the fallout, Carl returns and develops a gentle, hopeful relationship with Alexandra.
