Mark Hayter (born 7 November 1963) is a British nurse and Emeritus Professor of Nursing at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Nursing and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of School Nursing and Nursing Outlook. His research covers sexual health, including psychosexual health, adolescent reproductive health, family planning, contraceptive counseling, and HIV. He helped found The Lancet Commission on Nursing.

A registered nurse, he earned a BA in social dimensions of health from Sheffield Hallam University and an MMedSci in clinical nursing plus a PhD from the University of Sheffield.

Career highlights include Head of the School of Nursing and Public Health at MMU (2021–2024); previously Head of Department, Nursing (2013–2016) and Associate Dean of Research (2016–2020); and prior to MMU, Professor of Nursing and Health Research at the University of Hull. He is an international expert in qualitative research and a frequent contributor to public outlets. He has written for The Conversation about HIV self-testing to model patient health behavior and for The Guardian on nursing training in the NHS.

Honors include Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (2021); Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2013); Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts; Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science; and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery ad eundem (2020). He has served on many international committees, including RCNi conferences (2010, 2012), the International School Nurse Conference (2011), and the World Association for Sexual Health Conference (2011). He is listed in Stanford’s top 2% of scientists and has about 160 Web of Science publications with over 2,000 citations and an h-index of 27. His three most-cited articles are not listed here.
