Not the Boy Next Door is the seventh and second-to-last studio album by Australian singer and songwriter Peter Allen. It was released on March 11, 1983, and was his first album for Arista Records. The album runs about 39 minutes and 57 seconds and reached number 36 in Australia and number 170 on the US Billboard 200. Four singles from the album—Not the Boy Next Door, You Haven’t Heard the Last of Me, Once Before I Go, and You and Me (We Wanted It All)—all charted on the Billboard Adult Contemporary list.

In 1981, Allen had his first US chart hit with Fly Away, and he co-wrote Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do), which topped the charts and won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song. After ending his contract with A&M Records in 1982 with a greatest-hits release, he signed with Arista Records to seek stronger support for his career.

A reviewer from AllMusic, William Ruhlmann, noted that the nine songs on Not the Boy Next Door seemed carefully tailored to fit radio formats, perhaps too well, and that they echo early-1980s dance-pop and pop-rock that didn’t quite connect.
