North Tacoma, Tacoma, Washington
North Tacoma, also known as the North End, is a neighborhood in Tacoma, Washington. It’s famous for waterfront parks and restaurants, Point Defiance Park, the University of Puget Sound, Stadium High School, and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Most people describe the North End using informal boundaries: roughly between 6th Avenue and Division Avenue on the south, with Puget Sound to the north, west, and east. The city also officially divides Tacoma into eight neighborhoods, but many residents still think of the North End as the area around Sixth Avenue and the nearby streets.
The main shopping and dining areas are along Sixth Avenue, the Proctor District, and Old Town, where you’ll find many independent restaurants and shops. The area has a working‑class history with fishermen and workers from the ASARCO plant (which closed in 1993). Today it has a small‑town feel, and many residents work in Tacoma. The waterfront around Old Town has seen redevelopment in recent years.
Politically, North Tacoma tends to vote Democratic in federal, state, and local elections. In past elections, Kerry (2004) and Obama (2008) won most votes in the area, and Patty Murray carried it in 2010.
