North American Native Fishes Association
North American Native Fishes Association (NANFA) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt U.S. organization founded in 1972 in Washington state. It brings together professional and amateur aquarists, anglers, fisheries biologists, ichthyologists, fish and wildlife officials, educators, and naturalists who share an interest in conserving, studying, and responsibly keeping North America’s native fishes.
Publications
NANFA publishes American Currents magazine four times a year. The magazine covers collecting, keeping, observing, conserving, and breeding North American fishes.
Grants
NANFA funds a conservation research grant for studies on endangered fishes and the Gerald C. Corcoran Education Grant for educational outreach to the general public.
Meetings and activities
The association organizes meetings and excursions where members discuss fish biology, legally and responsibly collect native fishes, remove exotic fishes, and work to conserve or restore habitats. Its annual convention includes lectures, collecting trips, and visits to natural history museums, public aquariums, or zoos. NANFA also runs an active email list, website, and online discussion forum.
