Jimmie Ward
Jimmie Ward is an American football safety who plays for the Houston Texans in the NFL. Born on July 18, 1991, in Racine, Wisconsin, he grew up in Mobile, Alabama, where he starred at Davidson High School before playing college football at Northern Illinois University. Ward was a standout defender in college, earning multiple all-conference honors and a national third-team All-American selection in 2013. He was known for his tackling, playmaking, and ability to contribute on special teams, but he couldn’t participate fully in the NFL Combine due to a foot stress fracture.
Ward was drafted in the first round in 2014 by the San Francisco 49ers, 30th overall. He signed a four-year rookie contract and spent his early seasons as a versatile defensive back, switching between safety and cornerback as the team experimented with different roles. His rookie year was cut short by a foot injury, but he returned the following seasons to become a regular contributor, even scoring his first NFL touchdown in 2015.
Over the years, Ward moved around the defense, highlighting his flexibility but also facing several injuries. He spent time as a full-time cornerback in 2016, suffered a fractured collarbone in 2016, and dealt with hamstring and forearm injuries that kept him out for extended periods in 2017 and 2018. Despite the setbacks, he remained a key player for San Francisco, contributing in tackles, pass deflections, and occasional big plays, including a defensive touchdown in 2015 and a notable blocked field goal in the 2021 postseason.
Ward signed a significant contract extension in 2020 with the 49ers but later joined the Houston Texans in 2023, taking on a leadership role as a team captain. His time with Houston included a hip injury early in the 2023 season, a clutch late-game interception to seal a win in Week 13, and an injury-related stint on injured reserve. He signed a one-year extension in 2024 and started most of the season, adding two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and several important plays before another foot injury ended his year.
Off the field, Ward faced legal troubles in 2025, including a third-degree felony assault arrest that led to a bail arrangement. He later faced another incident in August 2025 and a September 2025 court proceeding that did not indict him on the previously alleged crimes.
Career stats through 2025 include 549 total tackles, 3.0 sacks, 51 pass deflections, 10 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 3 defensive touchdowns. Ward’s career is marked by his versatility, resilience, and the leadership role he has taken with the Texans.
