The Nissan 180SX is a 3-door fastback sports car built by Nissan for the Japanese market from 1988 to 1998. It’s based on the S13 Silvia chassis and shares many components, but it was sold as the 180SX in Japan and was rebadged outside Japan as the 200SX (Europe) or 240SX (North America).

Design and market position
The 180SX features distinctive pop-up headlights and a rear hatch. It was sold through Nissan Bluebird Store locations, while the Silvia was sold at Nissan Prince Store. In Japan, the 180SX replaced the Gazelle, and the Silvia S13 continued alongside it for a time before the Silvia line ended in 1993 while the 180SX remained in production into the next generation.

Generations and engines
- First generation (March 1989 – January 1991): CA18DET 1.8L turbo engine (about 175 PS). Transmissions were 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. An optional HICAS II four-wheel steering system was available on the later Type II.
- Second generation (January 1991 – August 1996): Switched to the SR20DET 2.0L turbo engine (about 205 PS). Brakes were upgraded and a limited-slip differential was added. This gen received a facelift in 1991 and later trims added features like electronic climate control and CD audio. The lineup included Type I, II, and III; Super HICAS was available, along with 5-speed manuals and 4-speed automatics. In 1994, the range was renamed with new Type X and Type R variants.
- Third generation (August 1996 – December 1998): Subtle styling updates with a new front bumper, taillights, and 15-inch wheels. A driver’s airbag was added, plus minor interior and wiring updates. Three main trims persisted: Type X, Type R (turbo), and Type S (and later Type G in some markets). The Type X and Type R shared the turbo 205 PS package, while the Type S/G used a naturally aspirated SR20DE engine with about 140 PS. The Type R offered fewer cosmetic extras than the Type X.

Notable variants and regional details
- Kid’s Heart Sileighty: A limited, official 500-unit collaboration that fuses a 180SX with front-end styling from the S13 Silvia, producing a high-boost turbo version (up to about 230 PS with tuning).
- Europe: The RS13U 200SX in Europe used the CA18DET engine and did not import the SR20DET. European models had their own brake and handling setups, with some parts tailored to local markets.

Performance and culture
The 180SX is a popular drift car and a regular in tuning and motorsport scenes, known for its balanced chassis, rear-wheel drive dynamics, and strong after-market support.
