Ninth (Peter Murphy album)
Ninth is the ninth solo album and the eighth studio album by English musician Peter Murphy. It was released on 7 June 2011 by Nettwerk Records and was produced by David Baron. The recording took place at Sun Mountain in Boiceville, New York, and the album runs about 46 minutes, blending alternative rock and gothic rock.
The first single, “I Spit Roses” (backed with “The Prince & Old Lady Shade”), was released on 22 March 2011. A second single, “Seasaw Sway,” appeared later in 2011. Murphy has said the album aims to capture the spark of people playing together in a room and to reclaim his legacy with a direct, swaggering approach. Wired described it as a continuation of the Go Away White trajectory, with intense energy and beauty.
Ninth received generally positive reviews. Metacritic gave it an average score of 65/100 based on 9 reviews. AllMusic’s David Jeffries gave it 4 stars, praising its focused, well-balanced production. PopMatters noted a few droning moments but called it a virile return to form. Consequence of Sound likened the sound to the era of Joy Division, while The Buffalo News highlighted its visceral power and striking return-to-form. The A.V. Club offered a more mixed view, and Mojo called it Murphy’s most conventional and somewhat dull effort, comparing it unfavorably to earlier works.
All lyrics are written by Peter Murphy, and all music is composed by Peter Murphy and David Baron, with any exceptions noted.
