34th Kentucky Infantry Regiment

The 34th Kentucky Infantry Regiment was a Union Army infantry unit in the Civil War. It was organized in Louisville, Kentucky from the Louisville Provost Guard and began service in October 1862 under Colonel Henry Dent. The regiment served in Kentucky and East Tennessee, moving through several districts and corps, and carried out provost and garrison duties until it mustered out at Knoxville on June 24, 1865.

Duty and movements: Provost duty at Louisville until May 8, 1863. Company K served at Munfordville in September 1862. It then moved to Bowling Green and later Glasgow, where it performed garrison duty and took part in operations against Morgan. It marched to Knoxville and Morristown in late September to early October 1863, fought at Blue Springs on October 10, and stayed at Morristown until December 5. In December it moved to Tazewell and remained there until January 1864, when it attacked Tazewell on January 24. The regiment then moved to Cumberland Gap for duty there until November 1864, with an operation at Powell River Bridge on February 22, 1864 (A and D Companies). It returned to Knoxville in late 1864 for provost duty until February 1865, then remained around Cumberland Gap until April 24, 1865. An expedition to Gibson's Mills April 20–22, 1865 led to the surrender of several Confederate commands totaling about 2,713 men. The regiment was then ordered to Knoxville, then Loudon, and served in garrison duties there until June 20, 1865.

Casualties: The 34th Kentucky Infantry lost 69 men during service: 3 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 2 officers and 64 enlisted men died of disease.
