Route description
- The western end begins at NY 63 in Oakfield and heads east as Drake Street.
- It leaves Oakfield for rural areas and continues through farmland, staying north of I-90.
- In Elba, NY 262 briefly overlaps NY 98 on South Main Street, then continues northeast through the village.
- East of Elba, it reaches Byron and meets NY 237.
- After Byron, ownership and maintenance switch from the state to Genesee County, which treats the eastern part as an unsigned County Route 13 (CR 13) and the road becomes Townline Road.
- NY 262 crosses the CSX Rochester Subdivision rail line, then heads toward Bergen and ends at NY 19 (South Lake Avenue) in Bergen. The Bergen center is about 0.5 miles north on NY 19.
Maintenance and connections
- The western portion is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT); the eastern portion is maintained by Genesee County as CR 13.
- NY 262 runs a few miles north of I-90, offering another route through Genesee County besides the Thruway.
History
- NY 262 was created in the 1930 renumbering. It originally ran between Elba and Byron along a more northern route.
- By 1931, it was extended on both ends to reach NY 63 in Oakfield and NY 63 (now NY 19) in Bergen.
- The eastern end was shortened to a point south of Elba around 1939.
- It was extended east to Byron in the early 1950s (using Ford and Byron–Elba Roads) to serve Byron.
- The route was extended back to Bergen in the late 1950s.
- All of NY 262 is located within Genesee County.
