New Delhi railway station (NDLS) is the main rail hub in India’s capital. It sits in Central Delhi, about 2 kilometers north of Connaught Place. The station has 16 platforms and 20 tracks, with two entrances: Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj. It is connected to the Delhi Metro via the Yellow Line (Airport Express) and will connect to the Green Line in the future. A long skywalk links the Ajmeri Gate entrance to the metro and nearby parking, while a footbridge connects the Paharganj entrance to the parking area.

NDLS is a busy NSG-1 category station, serving around 500,000 passengers a day (rising to about 700,000 during festivals) and handling many trains. It is one of five major Delhi stations, along with Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal, and Sarai Rohilla.

The station opened in 1956, replacing the older Delhi Junction as the city’s main rail hub. Over the years the building was expanded and modernized, with the exterior updated for major games. A new building facing Ajmeri Gate opened in 2009, and platform numbers increased from 12 to 16. Since 1999, it has housed what was once the world’s largest route relay interlocking system.

A major redevelop ment project is underway, expected to complete around 2029. Plans include energy-saving green buildings on both sides of the station, complete platform modernization, seven new flyovers and two tunnels to ease road traffic, improved security with AI-based CCTV, better passenger facilities, and a Multimodal Transport Hub that links rail, metro, buses and other transport.

New Delhi is a key origin and stop for many important trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and other express services to cities across India. The station also serves luxury tourist trains that begin or end here. In addition to passenger services, it handles cargo traffic. The Yellow Line connects to the airport, while other metro lines link to many parts of the city. The station area is historic and busy, with nearby temples and monuments. In February 2025, a stampede at the station during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela caused multiple deaths and injuries, highlighting ongoing traffic and crowd-management challenges in the area.
