Necklace (horse)
Necklace (born 24 February 2001) is a bay Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare bred in England and trained in Ireland. She was bred at Meon Valley Stud, owned by Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor, and trained by Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle, with Mick Kinane riding in all her races. Her sire is Darshaan and her dam is Spinning the Yarn, from a family that includes Colorspin.
Racing career
- Career record: 9 starts, 2 wins, 1 second, 1 third. Earnings: about £210,141.
- Two-year-old highlights (2003): Necklace won two of her four races, taking the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. She also ran in a maiden at the Curragh, finishing second to Soviet Belle.
- Later in 2003 she finished tenth in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp.
- Three-year-old season (2004): She ran in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket (12th) and the Irish 1000 Guineas (6th). She then finished fourth in the Epsom Oaks.
- Abroad: In the United States, she finished third in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park and fourth in a race at Belmont Park.
Breeding career
- Retired to become a broodmare for Coolmore Stud. She was bred mainly to Sadler’s Wells and his line, but produced only one minor winner from eight foals.
