National Voters' Day
National Voters’ Day is celebrated every year on 25 January in India to mark the founding of the Election Commission of India (ECI). It was created by the government to encourage young people to vote, and the first celebration was on 25 January 2011.
To boost youth participation, the Election Commission identifies all eligible voters who turn 18 by January 1 each year at about 8.5 lakh polling stations, enrolls them, and hands over their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) on 25 January. New voters also receive a badge that reads “Proud to be a voter – Ready to vote.” Each year may have a theme, such as 2016’s focus on “Inclusive and qualitative participation” with the slogan “No Voter to be left behind.” National Awards are given for excellence and innovation in election processes.
The day is a celebration of young voters and their importance in democracy.
