Great Temptation
Great Temptation
Great Temptation is an Australian game show that aired on the Seven Network from 1970 to 1974. It was produced by Grundy Productions. There was a daytime version called Temptation and a prime-time version titled $25,000 Great Temptation that began on July 5, 1971.
Host and format:
- Host: Tony Barber, with Barbara Rogers as co-host. Max Rowley narrated.
- Each episode ran about 30 minutes and featured three contestants who earned dollars for each correct answer.
- During the show, the leading contestant could “buy” a valuable prize for a small deduction from their score, and the prize was theirs no matter what happened later.
- The winner could return the next day or take a major prize; major prizes accumulated but could be lost if beaten in a later round.
Production and people:
- Much of the show was filmed at Mobbs Lane studios in Sydney.
- Questions were written by George Black, a former successful contestant and later writer for Pick A Box.
- Notable contestants included Rona Collings and Fran Powell (the latter later worked on Sale of the Century).
A notable incident:
- Barber recalled that a contestant died onstage during a taping in the 1970s; the moment was not broadcast.
First jackpot moment:
- The first jackpot-winning episode was photographed by Ron Wormwell.
Context:
- Reg Grundy was inspired by the American show Sale of the Century (1969). Although he couldn’t secure the rights to make an Australian version of Sale until 1980, that show went on to run for many years, helping establish Grundy’s influence in Australian television.
