Naphthol AS is an organic compound used as a building block in making some azo dyes. Its formula is C17H13NO2. It is the amide made from 3-hydroxy-2-carboxynaphthalene and aniline (the N-phenylamide). Related compounds exist, such as Naphthol AS-OL, where the substituent on nitrogen is a substituted phenyl group. It was identified in 1911 as a useful precursor for wool dyes by chemists at the Offenbach dye works.
