Nanri Island
Nanri Island is a small island in the Taiwan Strait, off the southeast coast of China. It is part of Nanri Town in Xiuyu District, Putian City, Fujian Province. The island covers about 42 square kilometers and sits at roughly 25.202°N, 119.498°E. The time zone is China Standard Time (UTC+8).
Nanri Town includes many islands—111 in total—with Nanri Island being the main one. The area has a population of more than 50,000 people. The island has also been known by names such as Nanjisü, Nanjih, Nanri Shan and Nanni Shan.
In October 1952, the Battle of Nanri Island took place between the People's Liberation Army and the Republic of China Army. The ROC won that battle and occupied Nanri for a time, but ROC forces later withdrew to Taiwan, and the island was re-occupied by the PRC.
The economy centers on fishing, with several fish farms nearby. The mudflats are used to grow seaweed and kelp. Tourism and energy are also important, and a wind farm was established on the island in 2015.
Nanri has several villages and communities that are part of Nanri Town in Xiuyu District.
