Dabrye
Dabrye is the stage name of Tadd Mullinix, who also goes by James T. Cotton and SK-1. He’s an American musician from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who grew up in nearby Troy. Since 2001, he has released music that blends IDM with instrumental hip hop.
Winking Makes a Face was the first album released on Ghostly International. Dabrye’s first album under his own name in the IDM-influenced style was 2001’s One/Three, which mixes instrumental hip hop with an experimental edge similar to Prefuse 73.
In 2004, the single “Game Over” featured MCs Jay Dee and Phat Kat and set the stage for his second full-length, Two/Three, which includes guests MF DOOM, Beans, Vast Aire, and Big Tone. The cover art for Two/Three was created by WK Interact.
Mullinix is known for music that blends the feel of live drumming with electronic programming. He later teamed with his former roommate D’Marc Cantu to form the techno/acid house group 2 AM/FM.
From One/Three, the track “Hyped-Up Plus Tax” was used as a jingle for a Motorola RAZR V3 commercial.
