NGC 3290, also known as Arp 53, is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the Hydra constellation. Its shape includes a small, bright companion on one arm. The galaxy lies about 161 Mpc (roughly 525 million light-years) away. It was discovered in 1886 by American astronomer Francis Leavenworth. NGC 3290 has an apparent magnitude of about 13.5 and contains regions where new stars are forming, along with abundant hydrogen gas. It is notable enough to be included in Arp’s catalog of unusual galaxies.
