My Mother's Wound

My Mother's Wound is a 2016 Turkish drama directed by Ozan Açıktan. Set in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the film follows Salih, a Bosniak teenager who leaves an orphanage to find his parents after learning that Nerma is his mother.

When Salih arrives in Simin Han, Nerma’s family helps him, and Mrs. Mevlide privately reveals that Salih is Nerma’s son. During the Bosnian War, Nerma was raped by Borislav Milić, a neighbor she knew. Nerma became pregnant and, overwhelmed by trauma, Salih was placed in an orphanage. Salih also meets Borislav’s wife, Marija, who is kind to him.

Salih travels to Prijedor to confront Borislav. Borislav hires him for a two-week trial, and Salih struggles to prove Borislav’s guilt. He discovers Borislav is a loving husband and rescuer, not the monster he expected. Salih grows closer to Marija, while Nerma’s memory and mental health remain unstable.

As Nerma regains memories, she learns the truth about Salih’s origins. Salih privately tells Nerma, “I am my mother’s wound,” a line that marks a turning point. Nerma recognizes Borislav as the rapist. A confrontation leads to a shootout: Borislav and Marija both die by suicide, and Salih and Nerma escape together as the film ends with Nerma calling out to Salih.
