Murghob District
Murghob District is a large district in eastern Tajikistan, part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. It covers about 37,300 square kilometers (14,400 square miles), making up a big part of Tajikistan’s land but with a small population. The population was about 15,900 in 2020. The administrative capital is the village of Murghob (also called Murghab).
Geography
- The area sits on a high plateau with scattered mountains, especially in the east and south.
- Notable features include the Fedchenko Glacier to the northwest and the Pamir River in the south.
- The Pamir Highway runs through the district from southwest to northeast.
- Major lakes are Karakul (northeast) and three river lakes: Sarez (Bartang River), Yashil Kul (Gunt River), and Zorkul (Pamir River).
- The eastern border touches China (Xinjiang); the southern border touches Afghanistan; the northern border borders Kyrgyzstan. Within Tajikistan, it is bordered by other Gorno-Badakhshan districts.
People and administration
- The population is mostly Kyrgyz, with Pamiris as a minority.
- The district is divided into six jamoats (local administrative units).
