Mubarak Manzil (Agra)
Mubarak Manzil, also known as Aurangzeb's Haveli, is a 17th-century Mughal building in Belanganj, Agra, Uttar Pradesh. It covered about 20,000 square feet near Ghat Road and was built in the 1600s by Emperor Aurangzeb after his victory in the Battle of Samugarh. It later housed several prominent Mughal figures and, under British rule, was repurposed for administrative use.
The site is tied to a turbulent history of ownership and use. Some records say it was originally Dara Shikoh’s palace before Aurangzeb renamed it after his win. The building served as a residence for notable figures such as Shah Jahan, Shah Shuja, and Aurangzeb himself. This reflects a Mughal pattern where grand residences changed hands under imperial authority.
During the British era, Mubarak Manzil underwent significant changes. An 1868 map places it near the pontoon bridge, and later the East India Railway used the site as a goods depot. The structure was rectangular, about 171 feet long and 84 feet wide, with corner towers. Its main space, sometimes called a masjid, functioned more like an audience hall, blending practical and ceremonial design typical of Mughal architecture, with engraved arches and decorative elements.
Mubarak Manzil was part of Agra’s rich Mughal heritage, a city once known for many Mughal-era structures along the Yamuna riverfront. In 2024, the Archaeological Survey of India proposed protecting the site, but in January 2025 much of the building was demolished during a demolition drive. Reportedly, over 100 tractors removed debris, and locals claimed collusion between a builder and officials, with about 70% of the structure destroyed.
The demolition sparked political controversy in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav criticized the action as bulldozing heritage. The Agra district magistrate ordered a status quo at the site and ordered a detailed land-record investigation. A team led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sachin Rajput, with officials from the ASI and state archaeology, conducted an on-site inspection to review the situation.
