The Mosque of Almalik al-Jukandar is in Cairo’s historic district, near the Mashad of Husayn and the Al-Azhar Mosque.

It was begun during the Bahri Mamluk period in the third reign of al-Nasir Muhammad. Almalik al-Jukandar was a wealthy Mamluk amir who served under al-Nasir Muhammad and later the Qalawunid sultans. He died in prison in Alexandria in 747 AH (1346 CE) during the reign of al-Kamil Sha’ban.

According to the historian al-Maqrizi, Almalik al-Jukandar founded the mosque in 758 AH (1357 CE) as a madrasa teaching the Shafi‘i school of law. The complex was supported by endowments (awqaf) and included a library.

At the main entrance there is an inscription, now partly faded, that reads that Almalik al-Jukandar built the mosque and sought God’s forgiveness, dated to the year 719 AH (1319–20 CE). This confirms that the founder was Almalik al-Jukandar during al-Nasir Muhammad’s third reign.
