Morovis barrio-pueblo
Morovis barrio-pueblo is the administrative center of Morovis, a municipality in Puerto Rico. It covers about 0.07 square miles (0.18 km²) and had 895 residents in 2010.
In many Puerto Rican towns, the barrio-pueblo includes a central plaza, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Morovis’ central plaza is a gathering place for events and everyday socializing. Across from the plaza is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen church, and the José Fontán School is also at the plaza and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
History:
- Morovis barrio-pueblo appeared in Spain’s records until Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory after the 1898 Spanish–American War.
- A 1899 U.S. census counted 1,064 people living there.
