Mekong–Mamberamo linguistic area
The Mekong–Mamberamo linguistic area is a proposed region of languages identified by David Gil in 2015. It links the Mainland Southeast Asia language area with the languages of the Nusantara archipelago and western New Guinea. The area covers Mainland Southeast Asia, Malaysia (both peninsular Malaysia and Borneo), and almost all of Indonesia, except the central New Guinea region east of the Mamberamo River. Gil lists 17 features that characterize this linguistic area.
