Game of the scene

Game of the scene is a concept in longform improv theater. Different groups explain it in their own ways, but a common idea is that the game is the repeating idea or premise in a scene. "Playing the game" means using that idea in your scene work. Once players find the game, they can apply it in two ways: by exploring their characters’ reasons and psychology, and by raising the stakes to push the scene further. The game can be made bigger or placed in more absurd situations to see how it plays out. However, focusing too hard on finding the game can make you miss it. Some players say to just have fun and not overthink it. The game tends to emerge naturally when you focus on the real relationship between players.
