Mission: Impossible is an American multimedia franchise about the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), a secret spy agency. It started as a 1966-1973 TV series, was revived in 1988-1990, and later became a blockbuster film series starring Tom Cruise beginning in 1996. By 2011 the franchise had earned more than $4 billion, making it one of the most successful in media history.

The latest chapter, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, opened in Tokyo on May 5, 2025, and reached theaters worldwide on May 23. It grossed about $598 million globally, with around $197.4 million in the U.S. and Canada and $400.6 million overseas. It was the highest-opening entry in the series and the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2025. Although the title suggests finality, Tom Cruise has signaled he may continue the role into his eighties.

The franchise’s famous music was composed by Lalo Schifrin in 5/4 time and includes the Morse code for “M.I.” The theme is a longtime staple and has won Grammys. Schifrin died in June 2025 at age 93, with many tributes noting his influence on spy-film music.

Notable cast notes: Jeremy Renner appeared in some films but did not return for later ones due to family commitments. Hayley Atwell, who plays Grace in Dead Reckoning, spent more than five years with the franchise, including extensive reshoots, finding the work physically demanding but rewarding.
