Mike Gregory
Mike Gregory (Michael Keith Gregory) (20 May 1964 – 19 November 2007) was an English professional rugby league player and coach. A versatile forward, he spent most of his playing career with Warrington from 1982 to 1994, with brief spells at Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in Australia and Salford. He earned 20 caps for Great Britain between 1987 and 1990, including nine as captain, and took part in the 1988 and 1990 Lions tours.
After retiring as a player, Gregory moved into coaching. He started as an assistant at St Helens, then became head coach of Swinton Lions. He joined his hometown club Wigan Warriors in 2001 as academy coach, leading the youth team to the 2002 Academy Championship, and was promoted to assistant coach in 2003. He served as caretaker and then head coach in 2003, guiding Wigan to the Super League Grand Final that year, which they lost to Bradford. He remained head coach into 2004 before illness forced him to step away.
In 2004, Gregory was diagnosed with progressive muscular atrophy, a form of motor neuron disease. He received treatment in the United States and later pursued a legal settlement with Wigan over support during his illness. He died on 19 November 2007, aged 43. In 2008 the Rugby Football League created the Spirit of Rugby League Award in his honour (renamed the Mike Gregory Spirit of Rugby League Award in later seasons). He is a Warrington Wolves Hall of Fame inductee (Heritage No. 822).
