Mike Fleck
Mike Fleck (born 1973) is a Republican who served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 81st district from January 2, 2007, to November 12, 2014. He succeeded Larry Sather and was later defeated by Richard Irvin in the 2014 Republican primary; Fleck won the Democratic nomination as a write-in but lost the general election.
In December 2012, Fleck publicly came out as gay, becoming one of the first openly gay state legislators in Pennsylvania. He and Brian Sims were among the first openly gay members in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. At the time, Fleck was the only openly gay Republican in the United States.
During his time in office, Fleck was viewed as a moderate Republican. He championed Charter School Reform and opposed Governor Tom Corbett’s proposal to privatize prison nurses, a measure that was eventually dropped. In 2012 he introduced a Correctional Officer’s Bill of Rights, and his legislation that year merged the Securities Commission into the Department of Banking, creating the Department of Banking and Securities.
In December 2014, Fleck was named to Governor-elect Tom Wolf’s transition committee. In June 2015 he joined Wolf’s administration as Director of the Bureau of Workforce Partnerships and Operations within the Department of Labor and Industry, overseeing Pennsylvania’s CareerLink sites.
Education and early career: Fleck grew up in Huntingdon County and attended Southern Huntingdon County High School. He earned a history degree with a minor in youth ministry from Liberty University in 1995 and pursued graduate studies at Shippensburg University. From 1999 to 2004 he worked as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America in Huntingdon County, and later worked for Raystown Developmental Services.
Personal life: Fleck’s partner is Dr. Warren Licht, a prominent New York City physician who has held leadership roles at hospitals there.
