Michael Stone (ice hockey)
Michael Robert Stone (born June 7, 1990) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the NHL for the Arizona Coyotes (formerly Phoenix Coyotes) and the Calgary Flames. He was drafted 69th overall in 2008 by the Coyotes.
Stone grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the son of Rob and Jackie Stone. His younger brother Mark Stone also plays hockey. As a youngster, he played for the Winnipeg Hawks and Winnipeg Thrashers before joining the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, where he was drafted 73rd overall in 2005. In his first Hitmen season he had 2 goals and 18 assists and shared Rookie of the Year honors. He later set franchise records for defence in points and assists and was ranked among the top North American skaters by NHL scouts.
After being drafted by the Coyotes, Stone signed an entry-level contract in 2009. He made his NHL debut on February 18, 2012, and scored his first NHL goal on March 10, 2012. He spent part of the 2012–13 season in the AHL due to the lockout, then returned to the Coyotes. He signed a three-year contract in 2013. His best NHL season came in 2015–16 with a career-high 36 points.
In February 2017, Stone was traded to the Calgary Flames. He signed a three-year extension with the Flames in 2017. In the 2018–19 season he suffered a blood clot and was out for part of the year, returning in March 2019 but playing sparingly. The Flames bought out his contract in 2019, but he re-signed with them on a one-year deal later that year, and again on a one-year contract for 2021–22. Stone retired on July 5, 2023, and joined the Flames’ player development team.
Stone married Michelle de Villenfagne in 2015; they met while he was billeted with her family in the WHL.
