Medal for the General
Medal for the General is a 1944 British comedy-drama directed by Maurice Elvey, based on the novel by James Ronald. The film stars Godfrey Tearle as General Victor Church, a proud World War I veteran who lives alone after losing his son. He wants to help in World War II but is told he is too old. After many rejections, a plan brings six evacuated London children to live with him. At first he resists, but he soon grows fond of them and takes on a fatherly role. He helps Limpy, a boy with a leg injury, get surgery and supports the older children as they cope with war-time life. A bomber crash near the house makes him a local hero, and he is badly burned while saving others.
The general receives the George Medal for civilian bravery. The cast includes Petula Clark as Irma, one of the evacuees, whom director Maurice Elvey discovered at a charity concert and later cast in another film. The US release title is The Gay Intruders. Critics noted mixed feelings: The Times called it warm-hearted with solid acting and direction, while The Daily Telegraph found the treatment overly sentimental.
