Meaning of names for minor planets 308001–309000

When a minor planet is confirmed, the IAU’s Minor Planet Center assigns it a permanent number. The discoverers may then propose a name following IAU rules. This article explains the meanings of the names for the objects in the 308001–309000 range that have been named. Official naming citations are approved by the IAU Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature and published in their bulletins; older citations appeared in the MPC’s Minor Planet Circulars, and recent ones are also available in the JPL Small-Body Database.

Lutz D. Schmadel compiled the Dictionary of Minor Planet Names from Paul Herget’s The Names of the Minor Planets, and researched the origins of many asteroid names, especially those named before World War II. This article uses material from that source.

New names are added only after official publication; pre-announcements are discouraged. The IAU’s WGSBN provides the full naming guidelines for non-cometary small bodies.
