Mask (DC Comics)
The Mask is a DC Comics character who often battles Wonder Woman. Created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter, she first appeared in Wonder Woman #24 in 1947 as Nina Close, a timid woman trapped in an abusive marriage. Her alter ego, the Mask, is a ruthless, violent personality. In the Golden Age story, the Mask traps victims in grisly masks that release poison unless a special key is used.
After DC rebooted its universe in 1985, the Mask was briefly absent from Wonder Woman’s revised world. She returned in 2007’s Wonder Woman (volume 3) Annual #1 as a masked anti-hero who punishes men who abuse women.
In 2021, writer-artist Sanya Anwar reimagined the Mask in Sensational Wonder Woman #13–14 as Natalia Close (née Nina Solorzano). This version portrays a troubled social media influencer who develops the deadly Mask persona as a criminal mastermind.
This Mask is distinct from any similar character in Dark Horse Comics. Originally, Marston used villains like the Mask to explore psychological themes, including dissociative identity disorder caused by trauma and abuse. The Mask has shown up in different forms over the years, from a villain who used torture masks to a vigilante-style figure who targets abusers, reflecting changing attitudes toward mental health and trauma.
Other Mask appearances include a magical duplicate in the Silver Age and occasional crossovers, and the more recent standalone appearances in Sensational Wonder Woman. The character has often battled Wonder Woman, as well as various other DC heroes and foes.
