Martha M. Lauzen is an American scholar who studies women in film and TV. She earned a PhD from the University of Maryland and an MA and BA from the University of Iowa. She is the executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film and a professor of film and television at San Diego State University. Her center researches women’s roles both on screen and behind the scenes and works to push Hollywood toward more diversity. Lauzen writes the annual studies The Celluloid Ceiling (film) and Boxed In (television), plus articles about women’s employment and representation in the industry. Her findings have been used by organizations like the ACLU and the California State Assembly to advocate for more employment of women in film and television.
