Overview
The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit that represents and supports more than 125,000 local businesses across Manhattan in New York City. Together, these businesses employ about 2.4 million people and generate roughly $939 billion in annual GDP.
History
The organization began in July 1920 as the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce. It was started by 11 merchants in Yorkville on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, at a time when anti-German sentiment was high after World War I. Over the years, the chamber expanded to cover Mid-East Manhattan, Mid-Manhattan, and eventually the entire borough of Manhattan.
Mission
Its main goal is to ignite growth, promote innovation, and advocate for Manhattan’s diverse business community. It supports members through advocacy, networking, business resources, and efforts to boost the borough’s economic development.
Programs and Initiatives
- AI + Digital Empowerment: helping businesses use artificial intelligence and digital tools for growth.
- Industry Councils and Peer Groups: high-level forums and referral networks for leaders.
- Networking and Lead Generation: events like networking gatherings, industry mixers, street fairs, and supplier conferences.
- Small Business Help Desk: free one-on-one consultations and neighborhood outreach.
- Storefront Resurgence Project: reviving Manhattan’s commercial corridors with facade improvements and storefront programs.
- Advocacy: lobbying and policy work at City Hall and in Albany to support pro-business ideas.
Leadership
President and CEO: Jessica Walker (since February 2016). She serves on boards including the Javits Center, Pursuit Lending, and United Neighborhood Houses, and participates in New York State’s Regional Economic Development Council for NYC. Board Chair: Don Winter, founder and CEO of Encompass Media Group.

- Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Foundation: provides resources, education, and programming for the business community.
- Community Benefit Fund: hosts major street fairs and uses proceeds to fund emergency grants for small businesses.
