Maritime Search and Rescue (Búsqueda y Rescate Marítimo) is the Mexican Navy’s unit responsible for saving people at sea. Its job is to respond quickly to maritime emergencies within about 50 miles of Mexico’s coast, improving the Navy’s rescue capabilities. It was created as a separate specialist arm to focus on sea rescue. The unit currently operates five ENSAR naval stations. There are two types of stations: Type A (Alfa) stations have one 47-foot Motor Lifeboat and two 33-foot Defender-class boats; Type B (Bravo) stations have three 33-foot Defender-class boats. The first ENSAR station opened on April 6, 2007, in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. The goal is to have 19 ENSAR stations: six Type A and thirteen Type B.
