María Antonieta Mejía
María Antonieta Mejía Sánchez (born 15 May 1981) is a Honduran politician and business manager who has served as First Vice President of Honduras since January 27, 2026. She serves alongside Vice Presidents Diana Herrera and Carlos Flores Guifarro under President Nasry Asfura.
Mejía was a member of the National Congress from January 2022 to January 2026, representing the National Party for the Francisco Morazán Department.
Born in San Marcos de Colón, Choluteca, she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras and a master’s degree in human resources-oriented business management. She has worked in various government secretariats and in the Ministry of Finance (2010–2014), and has done journalism in the United States for Univision and KQED Forum.
She was elected to Congress in the 2021 general election and became a prominent figure for her outspoken stance against Xiomara Castro’s government. In August 2024 she joined Nasry Asfura’s presidential ticket as the National Party vice presidential candidate for 2025. In March 2025 she was named as one of three vice presidents in the party’s primary slate. After a disputed vote count, she was declared First Vice President-elect on December 24, 2025, and received her credentials on January 21, 2026 before being sworn in on January 27, 2026. Mejía speaks Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and has two children.
