Manfred Mann Chapter Three is the debut studio album by Manfred Mann Chapter Three, released on 7 November 1969. It was recorded from June to October 1969 at Maximum Sound Studios in London and blends jazz rock with progressive rock. The original release runs about 50 minutes; some reissues include bonus material, bringing it to around 68 minutes. It was one of the first three albums issued on the Vertigo label.

The core team consists of Manfred Mann, who plays the organ and arranges the music, and Mike Hugg, who sings, plays piano, and is the main songwriter. The band is expanded with a five-piece brass section and several skilled jazz soloists.

The album’s sound centers on long, moody grooves built on slow, single-chord riffs, with breathy vocals, bold brass, and improvised solos. Notable tracks include “Travelling Lady,” “Snakeskin Garter,” “Devil Woman,” and “Time.” The instrumental “Konekuf” has no vocals, while “A Study in Inaccuracy” is freeform. Shorter, more melodic songs such as “Sometimes,” “One Way Glass,” “Ain’t It Sad,” and “Where Am I Going” focus on Hugg’s electric piano, with a standout solo on “Mister, You’re a Better Man Than I.”

The word “Konekuf” reflects Mann’s subtle reaction to Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech about immigration. Mann had left South Africa for several reasons, including its racism.

Some album ideas link to Mann’s later work. The musical theme from “Konekuf” would reappear as part of the title track on the Earth Band’s album Messin’. “One Way Glass” was re-recorded in a rockier style on Glorified Magnified. The Chapter Three version also appeared (under a different title and lyric) as “Broken-Glass Lives” on the Swedish film Swedish Fly Girls soundtrack (recorded in 1969; released in 1972). The Prodigy sampled the Chapter Three version of “One Way Glass” in “Stand Up,” and Mann played keyboard on that recording, later releasing the result on Lone Arranger. “Travelling Lady” had previously been recorded by Manfred Mann as the B-side to their final single “Ragamuffin Man” as “A B Side.”

Most tracks were written by Mike Hugg, with some exceptions noted. The album was released on Vertigo in the UK, with later reissues on Bronze (1980 UK) and Cohesion (1993 UK), as well as Polydor in the US and Fontana in Australia.
