Mamintal A. J. Tamano
Mamintal Abdul Jabbar Tamano (December 25, 1928 – May 18, 1994) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as both vice governor of Lanao del Sur and a senator. He was born in Tamparan, Lanao, and was valedictorian of Lanao High School in 1947. He earned a BA in 1952 and an LLB in 1953 from the University of the Philippines, and a Master of Laws from Cornell University in 1958. He began public service as justice of the peace of Marantao in 1954, and in 1959 he was elected vice governor of the newly formed province of Lanao del Sur, serving until 1969.
Tamano was elected to the Senate in 1969, but his term was cut short by martial law. He went into self-exile in Saudi Arabia until 1986. After Marcos was ousted, he joined President Corazon Aquino’s cabinet as Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations. He was elected again to the Senate in 1987 and served until 1992, focusing on autonomy for Muslims and Mindanao’s resources. He was the principal author of Republic Act 6848, which created the Al-Amanah Islamic Investment Bank of the Philippines. He ran for re-election in 1992 with the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino but did not win.
Tamano was married to Hadja Putri Zorayda Abbas and they had nine children, including Adel Tamano, a former university president and government official. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Manila on May 18, 1994.
