Mamalarky (album)
Mamalarky is the debut studio album by the American indie rock band Mamalarky. It was released on November 20, 2020, through Fire Talk Records and runs about 30 minutes.
Recording happened over two years, after their 2018 debut EP Fundamental Thrive Hive. The band recorded from November 2018 to December 2019 in Los Angeles at Studio 22 and Automatic, and in Austin, Texas, with mixing completed in January 2020 in Austin. Joe LaPorta produced the album.
Singles released around the album include Fury (January 15, 2020), Schism Trek (September 15, 2020), You Make Me Smile (October 17, 2020), and Drug Store Model (November 16, 2020).
Critical reception was positive. Metacritic shows an average score of 74/100 from four critics. Pitchfork’s Jesse Locke gave 7.1/10, noting strong instrumental interplay that makes the indie rock sound feel forward-moving. Gigwise’s Niamh Pillinger gave 8/10, saying the band blends many influences into a unique prog-indie style. Band members bring diverse backgrounds, with Michael Hunter on keyboard/synth bass (also with White Denim) and Dylan Hill on drums (from Big Wy’s brass band).
