Lucas de Valdés
Lucas de Valdés Carasquilla (1661–1724) was a Spanish Baroque painter and engraver who worked mainly in Seville. He was the son of painter Juan de Valdés Leal and Isabella Carasquilla. Born in Seville, he engraved four plates at age eleven for Fiestas de Seville a la canonización de San Fernando, celebrating the saint’s virtues. He later became the mathematical master at Cádiz’s Marine College but continued painting and engraving until his death there. He painted saints and portraits, and some of these works he also engraved, including portraits of Father Francisca Tamariz and the philanthropist Manara. One of his notable paintings shows the Spanish victory at the Battle of Lepanto. His son Juan was also an engraver.
