Louisville Cardinals men's basketball
The Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball program represents the University of Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). They play their home games at the KFC Yum! Center in downtown Louisville, a venue opened in 2010 that seats about 22,000. Before that, they played at Freedom Hall. Louisville is one of the sport’s most storied programs, known for national titles, great coaches, and a fierce rivalry with Kentucky.
The Cardinals have won two official NCAA championships (1980 and 1986). They made multiple Final Four appearances, but their 2012 and 2013 trips were vacated by the NCAA, along with many wins from 2011–2015. The program has produced many star players and has been led by famous coaches, including Denny Crum, who built Louisville into a national power with six Final Four runs and the 1980 title, and Rick Pitino, whose tenure included a national title run and several deep tournaments before he was fired amid a major scandal in 2017. Since then, Louisville has undergone several coaching changes, with Pat Kelsey named head coach in 2024 after brief stints for Chris Mack and Kenny Payne. Kelsey’s first year turned the program around quickly, finishing with a strong record and earning ACC Coach of the Year honors; the team earned an NCAA bid in his first season.
Louisville’s basketball tradition includes a deep rivalry with Kentucky, one of the sport’s most famous matchups. The program has retired jerseys to honor its great players, produced numerous All-Americans and NBA players, and has a long history of success both on the court and in national standings. The team remains a prominent part of college basketball’s landscape, balancing a legacy of championships with the challenges and changes that have shaped the program in recent years.
