Lost in Alphaville
Lost in Alphaville is the third full-length studio album by The Rentals. It was released in August 2014 through Polyvinyl Records, and it’s their first new album in 15 years since 1999’s Seven More Minutes. It’s also the band’s first release with Polyvinyl, which they joined in December 2013. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, Nashville, and New Orleans.
The record features guest appearances from Patrick Carney of The Black Keys on drums, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius on vocals, Ryen Slegr of Ozma on guitar, and Lauren Chipman of The Section Quartet on viola and piano. Matt Sharp and The Rentals produced the album, which was mixed by Grammy-winning producer Dave Sardy. All songs were written by Matt Sharp. The album is about 40 minutes long.
Lost in Alphaville received generally favorable reviews. Metacritic scores it at 69 out of 100 based on 13 reviews. Critics praised its big, modern indie-rock sound with heart, and noted a more arranged, chamber-pop feel tinged with shoegaze.
Background: After disbanding in 1999 following Seven More Minutes, The Rentals reformed in 2005 and released The Last Little Life EP along with several mini-albums as part of the Songs About Time project in 2009. In December 2013 Sharp announced that the band had signed with Polyvinyl for a forthcoming full-length release.
Availability: The album is available on CD, vinyl, cassette, and as a digital download.
