Lorne Maeck
Lorne Howard Maeck (March 7, 1926 – May 5, 2014) was a Progressive Conservative member of Ontario’s Legislative Assembly from 1971 to 1981, representing Parry Sound. He also served in the cabinet of Premier Bill Davis as Minister of Revenue.
Maeck grew up in a poor family near South River, Ontario. He left school after Grade 10 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 17, serving as a wireless air gunner in World War II. After the war, he joined the Ontario Provincial Police and worked his way up to detective. He later ran several local businesses, including a gas station, a bus company, and a furniture store.
His political career began as a Councillor and then Reeve of the Village of South River. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1971 and re-elected in 1975 and 1977, serving on many committees and as Parliamentary Assistant to two ministers, as well as Government Whip, before becoming Minister of Revenue. He retired from politics in 1981 and did not seek re-election, paving the way for Ernie Eves.
Maeck and his wife Ivy—who died in 2011—had three children. He retired to North Bay in 2010 and died there on May 5, 2014, at age 88.
