Live in Tokyo is Weather Report’s third release and their first live album. It was released in Japan by CBS/Sony on May 1, 1972 and was recorded on January 13, 1972 at Shibuya Kokaido Hall in Tokyo during one of five sold-out concerts in Japan that month. The 88-minute, 29-second show features jazz fusion and free jazz. The album was produced by Kiyoshi Itoh. In Weather Report’s discography, it sits after the 1971 Weather Report album and before I Sing the Body Electric (1972). The live recording includes full performances of tracks that were edited for the studio release I Sing the Body Electric. A US release did not happen until a 2014 CD reissue by Wounded Bird Records.
