Listen to Your Heart (Roxette song)
Listen to Your Heart is a song by Swedish duo Roxette. It was released in September 1988 as the second single from their album Look Sharp!. The track was written by Per Gessle and Mats Persson and produced by Clarence Öfwerman.
The song became one of Roxette’s biggest hits, reaching number one in the United States and Canada around November 1989. It was notable for reaching the top of the US charts without a commercially released 7-inch single. In the United Kingdom it originally peaked at 62 in October 1989. After the success of “It Must Have Been Love,” it was reissued in August 1990 as a double A-side with “Dangerous,” peaking at number six.
The music video, directed by Doug Freel, was filmed in Sweden at the Borgholm Castle ruins on the island of Öland.
Listen to Your Heart is an alternative rock/pop ballad with a slow-to-mid tempo. Its lyrics describe the feeling of being torn between an old relationship and a new love, and the idea of listening to one’s heart.
There are several versions of the song, including the original album version, a Swedish single edit, a US remix used in the video, and other edits.
Critical opinions were mixed: some described the track as bland or overproduced, while others saw it as a big worldwide hit. Roxette has performed Listen to Your Heart on all their tours since its release.
In 2003, Belgian dance group DHT released a cover featuring Edmée. It became a top-10 hit in several countries and topped the US Dance Airplay chart. Per Gessle once called the song “The Big Bad Ballad,” noting it aimed to capture a grand American FM-rock sound.
